Scorchers v Heat match preview

A massive Boxing Day cricket schedule culminates in WA when the Scorchers host the Heat as the Big Bash League season rolls on.

The once-almighty Perth Scorchers have spluttered in their two away matches after a resounding first-up win against the Melbourne Stars and will be looking to return to winning ways against the undefeated Heat.

Cooper Connolly showed all his class in his well-compiled innings of 66 off 50 balls on what was a tricky surface against the Melbourne Renegades in their last outing and lifted his team to a competitive total of 8/143.

The knock wasn’t enough in the end, despite a well-rounded bowling innings, as the Renegades prevailed with six balls remaining.

The Brisbane Heat, on the other hand, have been quite impressive in both outings in their BBL title defence.

They overhauled the Adelaide Strikers in a last-ball thriller on Sunday night thanks to an unbeaten knock of 78 off 49 from Nathan McSweeney after he was dropped from the Australian Test side.

Both sides are set to gain some key inclusions with Aaron Hardie (Scorchers) and Spencer Johnson (Heat) returning from injury. Perth are likely to lose Josh Inglis to Test duties, however.

Brisbane enter the match as $2 outsiders with top cricket betting sites, having lost four of their last five clashes against Perth.

The Scorchers enter as slight favourites at a $1.81 quote with Marantelli Bet, having not lost to the visitors at home since January 2019.

Scorchers vs Heat BBL predictions

The Heat look poised to break their drought in WA, and they present great value for an upset. With Colin Munro, Jimmy Peirson and Nathan McSweeney in the top order, they can counter the Scorchers’ bowling attack. Backed by a strong bowling unit led by Xavier Bartlett, the Heat are serious BBL14 title contenders and must secure a win in Perth to strengthen their campaign.

McSweeney showcased his versatility with a brilliant 78 against the Strikers, proving he is more than a red-ball specialist. With an average of 31 in T20s, he’s Brisbane Heat’s most reliable batter. At $4.20 to top their run chart, the value is too good to ignore.

Bartlett has started BBL14 with contributions of 3/25 and 1/40 and is arguably bowling the best he has in his career. He is electric opening the innings with the ability to swing the ball away from the right-handers, and against a questionable Perth batting lineup, $2.30 for Bartlett to pick up a couple of poles looks like a great price with Marantelli Bet.
