Paris 2024: Australia 7s upset Argentina to top Group B
Australia’s men’s rugby 7’s side has qualified atop Group B to book their passage into the quarterfinals after an upset victory over Argentina at the Paris Olympics.
Despite being sent out as outsiders with leading sports bookmakers, the Aussie’s overcame a slow start to win 22-14.
The gold medal favourites, Argentina, opened the scoring in the second minute, as German Schulz scored.
However, a yellow card in the sixth minute to Luciano Gonzalez proved to be the turning point in the match.
The Aussies would go on to score three tries in the space of three minutes either side of halftime as Henry Hutchinson, Ben Dowling, and Dietrich Roache all crossed.
Having missed the conversions after all three tries, the Aussies left the door ajar for Argentina, and when Matias Osadczuk crossed in the 11th minute to score his third try of the Olympics, there was plenty of nerves amongst the Australian contingent at Stade De France.
A try by Nick Malouf in the 13th minute sealed progress through to the quarters, however, where the Aussies will face the seventh-placed side from the pool stages at 6:30am AEST on Friday morning.
