NRL Finals Week 1: Panthers v Roosters preview
The 2024 NRL finals kick off this Friday night with a blockbuster top-four clash between the Penrith Panthers and Sydney Roosters at BlueBet Stadium.
With home-ground advantage, the Panthers enter this qualifying final as $1.42 favourites with Bet365. The Roosters offer some value as $3.20 outsiders with BoomBet, while the line is set at 8.5 points.
With consecutive victories to round out the season, Penrith were able to secure second place on the NRL ladder. Ivan Cleary’s men have been comfortably the best defensive side in the NRL this season as they chase their fourth premiership in a row.
In the absence of star halfback Nathan Cleary, the Panthers have been disjointed in attack at times this season. However, the 26-year-old has been named to return from a shoulder injury, meaning Penrith are back to full strength.
The Roosters also finished the season with a win, beating the Rabbitohs by eight points despite resting several key players. Winning five of their last six matches, the Roosters finished the season with the best attacking record and the best points differential in the NRL.
However, Trent Robinson’s side finished with a 3-7 record against the other top-eight sides this season, which includes a 22-16 loss to the Panthers in round four.
There are four big inclusions for the Tricolours as Lindsay Collins, Daniel Tupou, Dom Young and Nat Butcher all return. Terrell May and Naufahu Whyte go back to the bench, while De La Salle Va’a, Blake Steep and Mark Nawaqanitawase make way.
The Roosters will have some key players missing throughout the finals series, as Victor Radley, Egan Butcher, Brandon Smith and Sam Walker are all ruled out for the season.

Panthers v Roosters match predictions
After winning the last nine meetings between the sides, Penrith should enter this match with plenty of confidence. They have also won their last nine finals matches, while they have no injuries in their best 17. Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards has an excellent record against the Roosters, scoring in each of the last three meetings. He has 10 tries from 17 appearances this season, which includes seven against top-eight sides. At $2.45 with top Australian betting sites, back Edwards to get over the line.
Finishing the regular season with 19 tries in 21 games, Roosters winger Daniel Tupou is an constant threat with his speed and aerial ability.
