Oscar Piastri wins Azerbaijan GP after thrilling 31-lap battle
The 2024 Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday, September 15, was one to remember as rookie sensation Oscar Piastri claimed his second F1 win.
The top online bookmakers were offering a lovely +300 for the George Russell podium and +450 for Piastri to secure the win, being the best value of this week as tipped in our Baku betting guide.
Another fight between McLaren and Ferarri this weekend. after the spectacular one-stop strategy from Charles Leclerc in the Italy GP, McLaren were looking to fight back and did. Stealing their victory after a stunning lap 20 overtake, Oscar Piastri saw the chequered flag first for the second time this year.
For 31 laps, Leclerc and Piastri fighting lap after lap down the main straight was the most exciting race of this year. Both drivers were within one second for almost the entire 31 laps, with Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz Jr. joining in for the fight for the first time; however, it ended early when the two collided after turn two on the second last lap of the race.
Mercedes’ George Russell was there to pick up the scraps to gain his first podium since his win in Austria in June.
2024 Baku GP Biggest Winners
1st – Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – The best defending we’ve seen from a driver this year. 31 laps of hard but fair fighting between him and Leclerc had viewers on the edge of their seats.
2nd – Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – While he ultimately lost from pole position, Leclerc’s performance was commendable. He battled fiercely with Oscar Piastri for over half the race, consistently keeping within DRS range to remain in contention for the lead. Despite the outcome, Leclerc demonstrated resilience and determination, pushing hard until the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed on the penultimate lap.
4th – Lando Norris (McLaren) – With a little help from the Perez and Sainz accident, Norris went from P15 on the grid to P4 and outscored his main rival in the drivers championship, Max Verstappen.
2024 Baku Biggest Blunders
19th – Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) – Contact with Yuki Tsunoda on lap 1 led to Stroll having braking problems throughout the race and having to retire the car in the latter stages of the race.
17th – Carlos Sainz Jr (Ferrari) 18th – Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – After no further action is decided after the race, it leaves this situation with a little uncertainty. Both drivers were coming up to fight for the first position and managed to collide on the DRS straight after turn two coming together into a concrete barrier. This accident was probably just a racing incident but meant these two lost on some great points after they both had driven superb races.
5th – Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – Starting from P6 and finishing P5 only due to the accident leaves Verstappen and Red Bull Racing with many questions. His main rival Norris overtook him during the race, who started from P15.
Baku Biggest Surprise
8th – Franco Colapinto (Williams) – The rookie was sensational here, making his first appearance into Q3 and finishing in P8 in just his second race. This means the rookie outscored Logan Sergeant in only two races and looks to be a nice grab for the end-of-season push for Williams.
