Oscar Piastri secures first Formula 1 victory at Hungarian GP

Oscar Piastri claims Hungaroring Grand Prix win

The 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 21, was a drama-filled 70-lap race, with Oscar Piastri getting his maiden Formula 1 Grand Prix win while becoming the season’s seventh individual winner.

The young Australian is the first person born in the 20th century to achieve a Grand Prix win, with the top F1 bookmakers paying $8 for this feat.

Although McLaren achieved a one-two finish, it wasn’t without drama for the team.

Lando Norris was ordered into the pits for the final stop one lap prior to Piastri and performed an ‘undercut’, which provided Norris with the lead over Piastri with 20 laps to go.

McLaren race engineer Will Joseph ordered the Norris to swap positions, but an unhappy Norris refused until lap 68.

Desperation from the McLaren pit wall led to emotional radio messages toward Norris: “I know you’ll do the right thing; just remember every single Sunday morning meeting we have.”

It was an unfortunate day for three-time world champion Max Verstappen, who finished fifth after a reckless dive bomb on lap 63 against rival Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen was called to the stewards following the incident, but no time penalties were handed out.

The Dutchman was paying as little as -121.95 with PlayUp prior to Saturday, as F1 punters were expecting a bounce back after his recent struggles.

Verstappen and Norris will both be looking to shake off the Hungarian GP woes and will now look towards the Belgium GP next week.

Neds has Norris and Verstappen priced as +150 joint favourites, while Piastri is at +650.

  • F1 Hungary dark-horse achievers

Sergio Perez — After some very poor form from the Red Bull driver, Perez managed to bounce back from P16 to finish seventh and secure six points for the team.

With all the recent speculation on Perez and possible driver replacements for the 2025 F1 season, Red Bull will be looking for some more consistent form in the last 11 races of the season.

Lewis Hamilton — Following his record-breaking ninth Silverstone GP win, Hamilton smashed even more records at Budapest, getting his 200th podium finish in F1.

Hamilton became the first driver to secure 200 podiums, with the next closest coming from Michael Schumacher at 155.

    F1 Hungary upsets

Lando Norris — Although Norris finished second, the comments to his race engineer and losing pole position after the first run rather soured his race.

After an impressive qualifying run, the race was set up for Norris to secure his second Grand Prix win and become a prime contender for the drivers’ championship; however, he was unable to keep his lead after turn one, continuing his ongoing problem of first corners from pole.

Daniel Ricciardo — Unfortunately, it wasn’t all celebratory for Australian drivers on Sunday after Ricciardo started from P9 and finished P12.

Teammate Yuki Tsunoda beat his senior teammate yet again, which makes Ricciardo’s future in Formula 1 uncertain with no contract set for 2025.
