New Zealand v Papua New Guinea match preview
New Zealand will be fighting to keep their spot in the Pacific Cup when they meet Papua New Guinea at CommBank Stadium this Sunday evening.
The two sides will clash for the first time in 11 years, and the Kiwis have lost just once to the Kumuls — way back in 1986. Online bookmakers have NZ as red-hot favourites at $1.08, with PNG paying a whopping $8 to relegate them to the Pacific Bowl.
New Zealand have struggled with maintaining possession and completing their sets, which has hurt their ability to capitalise on the fast, free-flowing style of football they are playing.
Papua New Guinea have earned their chance for promotion to the Pacific Cup by completing their sets, carrying the ball with strength and defending well in their wins over Fiji and the Cook Islands.
Kiwis coach Stacey Jones has placed trust in the side that lost to Tonga last weekend, naming the same 17 to take on the Kumuls.
PNG coach Jason Demetriou has named Rhyse Martin to return as captain in the second row, dropping Dan Russell back to the reserves. Liam Horne will start at hooker, with Judah Rimbu coming off the bench.

New Zealand v Papua New Guinea predictions
New Zealand have won by 40 points or more in nine of their 17 victories over PNG, including each of their last five clashes. While the Kumuls have performed admirably in this tournament, the Kiwis won last year’s Pacific Cup and are widely regarded as the second-best team in international rugby league. Punters can get $10 at PlayUp for the Kiwis to win by 41-50 points, which is incredible value.
Should the Kiwis put on a strong enough attacking performance to win by 41 points or more, this match will also more than likely have more than 44.5 points scored at $1.90 odds.
PNG’s middle defence showed some weakness last time out, leading to a Cook Islands try by a front-rower. Kiwi forward Joseph Tapine scored an incredibly skilful try against Tonga, and he is more than capable of barging over close to the line. At $4.25 with top rugby league bookies, Tapine offers great value to score again.
