NRL Good Friday Football kicks off in Sydney at 4pm as the South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the Canterbury Bulldogs from Accor Stadium. Recency bias would have many believe South Sydney would have the wood over Canterbury in head-to-head clashes. However, the Bulldogs have won 23 of the 42 clashes between these two clubs.

The last two NRL clashes between these clubs have the Rabbitohs winning both clashes by a total of 46 points, including a 38-0 thrashing in April 2020. The loss of Latrell Mitchell through injury has not swayed Souths fans as they sit solid at $1.28. The Bulldogs have stuck solid with halfback Kyle Flanagan, which could be the reason for support from $4.60 into $3.75.

South Sydney Rabbitohs may have started this season with a 2-3 win/loss record this season, but this looks almost solely a result of Lachlan Ilias’ instruction to the first-grade side. South Sydney have also played three of the top five teams so far this season in Penrith, the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm. The addition of Kyle Flanagan to the Bulldogs side has shown more attacking upside for his side, providing a passing and kicking game that Souths cannot ignore.

A narrow loss by South Sydney to the Storm in round two has seen strong defeats of the St George Dragons and the Sydney Roosters scoring a multitude of tries in both games. Not only is it highly likely that the total match points exceeded for this match, currently set at 39.5 points, but Souths should see victory come with a margin greater than 13 points, paying $2.10.

While Souths are conceding 16 points per game this season in defence, Canterbury Bulldogs have shown so far this season that they only could defend in small patches, allowing 21 points to be scored against them per game. The Bulldogs were particularly weak last week on the right-hand side defensively, as the Panthers scored from short and long range on the defensive right hand side of Canterbury.

This lack of defensive presence on the right edge against Souths will surely be exploited, as the Rabbitohs who have half a dozen genuine try scoring threats in the starting 13 alone. The left edge, much like last year, for South Sydney is particularly strong attacking on the left side. Expect to see Alex Johnston cross for a try at any time during the match, along with potential Origin back row bolter Keaon Kolomatangi continue his try scoring habits for this season paying $1.57 and $4 respectively with Australian bookmaker PlayUp.
