Wests Tigers vs Broncos NRL Round 8 preview

Super Saturday football for round eight of the 2024 NRL premiership kicks off in Campbelltown with a struggling Wests Tigers outfit hosting the brilliant Brisbane Broncos at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The Wests Tigers have lost their last three matches in a row to the Dolphins, Dragons and Panthers having beaten the Sharks and Eels in rounds two and three. Meanwhile, the Broncos have fought through errors and poor discipline to beat the Dolphins and Raiders after suffering a heartbreaking two-point loss to the Storm in Melbourne three weeks ago.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall will be without winger Junior Tupou (foot) with Solomon Alaimalo named to make his NRL debut. Samuela Fainu has been named to start in the second row with John Bateman shifting to lock and Fonua Pole dropping back to the interchange bench.

Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has also made several changes to his starting side. Selwyn Cobbo (shoulder) and Ezra Mam (finger) are out injured, with Jesse Arthars named to start in the centres, Deine Mariner returning on the wing and Jock Madden shifting to the five-eighth role.

Walters will also welcome back club captain Adam Reynolds at halfback, with Payne Haas starting in the front row and Brendan Piakura named in the second row. Fletcher Baker has been dropped back to the interchange, with Tristan Sailor and Jaiyden Hunt named in the reserves.

Wests Tigers v Brisbane Broncos Rd 8 betting predictions

The Broncos will be expected to start as strong favourites in this match despite odds fluctuating between $1.15 and $1.22 in the lead-up with the top NRL bookmakers.

The Broncos have been fortunate to rely on their star power in the last fortnight, and the return of Reynolds and Haas should spark better discipline from the visitors on the field. The Tigers have lost each of their last nine matches at Campbelltown Sports Stadium and the Broncos have won each of their last five matches at this ground by 12 points or less. Without Cobbo and Mam on the left edge, there is value in the $3.10 price for the Broncos to secure another win by 1-12 points.

Broncos second-rower Jordan Riki has continued to improve his combination with Reynolds this season, with a try from two line breaks and nine tackle breaks. Riki particularly enjoys playing the Tigers, having scored in three of his last four matches against them. Another great value play for the punters is backing Riki to score a try at any time ($3.50).

Isaiah Papali’i is another back-rower who enjoys taking on this weekend’s opposition, having a try in three of his last four games against Brisbane. Should he continue the form from last weekend against the Panthers that brought six tackle breaks in just 98 running metres, Papali’i is another great anytime tryscorer option ($6).
