NRL: Maguire holds off naming Broncos captain until 2025

New coach Michael Maguire has opted to hold off naming the Brisbane Broncos’ captain for the 2025 NRL season, saying the matter will be discussed in January.

Adam Reynolds has captained Brisbane since 2022, but he copped heat when the club was unable to make the top eight in 2024.

“As a captain he has had to go through a bit and he’s copped some stick, but he will be out there showing exactly who he is when he’s playing,” Maguire said this week.

“We will discuss the captaincy.

“Reyno (Reynolds) is a leader.

“I’ve had a lot of great experiences with Reyno, but we want some more.

“How that leadership and captaincy of the team looks, we will discuss that throughout January.

“There’s some things I will be doing with the team, but he is a very good leader.”

Reynolds has declared that he wants to retain the captaincy, to which Maguire responded that he has no reason to replace the veteran halfback.

“I love the battle of the captaincy and the mental side of things as well,” Reynolds said in October.

“When the team’s not going well, everything’s going to fall on the halfback and the captain.

“If the club or the coach wants me to be the captain, I’m more than happy to continue that job next season.”

While Maguire has not decided who his captain will be, he has already made a mark on the club’s culture in his pre-season camp, issuing a ban on casualwear and toplessness at training.

“It’s about creating the environment that we’re in,” Maguire said.

“I want a high standard and it’s important they help drive and create it themselves.

“That’s part of success. How you’re turning up is very important.

“That’s the professional part of being a rugby league player at this level.”

NRL betting sites expect the Broncos to bounce back under Maguire in 2025, with odds of just $1.25 for Brisbane to make the top eight next year.
