NRL injury news: Ponga out for up to 12 weeks with foot issue

Knights captain Kalyn Ponga is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

The Newcastle Knights will be without superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga for as many as 12 weeks after he suffered a Lisfranc injury in his foot against the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Accor Stadium.

He was also battling through a hip-pointer injury that occurred in round six of the 2024 NRL Premiership against the Roosters.

Knights centre Dane Gagai was a late withdrawal from that game due to a minor calf strain, but the club expects he will be available for round eight.

Meanwhile, Canterbury Bulldogs front-rower Chris Patolo suffered a suspected MCL tear in his left knee, with the club hoping he has avoided any damage to his ACL.

Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker failed to make it through the NRL’s concussion protocols in time to take the field in their loss against the Storm on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium; however, the club is confident he will be fit for selection in round eight.

Parramatta Eels captain Clint Gutherson struggled through right-knee issues on Friday night after having fluid drained from the joint.

The star fullback is dealing with ongoing pain and swelling resulting from a meniscus tear last year and two ACL injuries earlier in his career.

Canberra Raiders halfback Jamal Fogarty suffered a suspected ruptured bicep against the Broncos on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Depending on the location of the tear, he could be back within six weeks — unless surgery is required, which could rule him out up to four months.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs revealed recently that forward enforcer Tevita Tatola will require surgery after fracturing his fifth metatarsal, ruling him out for roughly 12 weeks.

The club also confirmed that Tyrone Munro had refractured his collarbone and would go under the knife as well, which is expected to keep him out for around eight weeks.
