NRL: Broncos star Ezra Mam facing nine-week ban
Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam is reportedly facing a nine-week ban at the beginning of the 2025 NRL season.
The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with illicit substances in his blood and without a licence, and was fined and disqualified from driving on Friday as a result.
The NRL issued a statement regarding the incident, indicating that Mam will face a sanction for breaching the league’s Code of Conduct.
“The Breach Notice alleges that Mam has engaged in conduct which is against the law and has brought the game and his Club into disrepute,” the statement read.
“In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the RLPA, information concerning the NRL’s proposed sanction will not be disclosed until the player has had the opportunity to respond to the alleged breach and the matter is finalised.”
However, the Australian Associated Press is reporting that Mam’s sanction will be a nine-week ban, meaning the playmaker will not be available until the Broncos’ round 10 clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Brisbane had a poor year in 2024, finishing 12th after NRL betting sites had them among the pre-season favourites to win the premiership.
They are again favoured by rugby league bookies ahead of the 2025 NRL season, with Bet365 putting the Broncos at $8 for the title — behind only the Melbourne Storm ($3.75) and Penrith Panthers ($4.75).
Brisbane’s season begins on March 6 against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium, where they are $1.78 favourites to win.
