North Melbourne v Richmond preview
North Melbourne host Richmond at Marvel Stadium this Saturday in a match that will likely decide the wooden spoon for the 2024 AFL season.
Last Saturday, the Kangaroos ran out of steam as they went down to Geelong by 40 points in Hobart. Having led early in the second term, the Roos were comfortably outclassed despite standout performances from Harry Sheezel (36 disposals, one goal) and Tristan Xerri (25 disposals, 54 hitouts).
Despite a disappointing season, Alastair Clarkson’s men have improved since their bye in round 12. After wins against the Eagles and Suns and close losses to Collingwood and Melbourne, they are slight favourites for this clash at $1.67 with BoomBet.
There will be plenty of decisions at selection for the Kangaroos this week, as key defensive trio Charlie Comben (groin), Aidan Corr (ankle) and Bigoa Nyuon (shoulder) are all in doubt. Zac Fisher (foot) and Eddie Ford (ankle) will also face fitness tests, while Colby McKercher, Kallan Dawson and Toby Pink are potential inclusions.
Richmond suffered their sixth successive defeat last Sunday, going down to Collingwood by 26 points at the MCG. After conceding six goals in the opening term, the Tigers never recovered and their inaccuracy stopped any chance of a comeback.
Sitting last on the ladder, it is no surprise to see that the Tigers are underdogs for this clash at $2.30 with Bet365. They are also favourites for the wooden spoon at $1.75 with leading AFL bookmakers.
Adam Yze’s side is set to be boosted by the return of Dustin Martin, Toby Nankervis and Jack Graham this week. However, star midfielder Tim Taranto is a test after being subbed out with a back injury against the Pies.

North Melbourne v Richmond predictions
While both sides are having poor seasons, North Melbourne have been the more impressive of the two in recent weeks. The Tigers have conceded over 90 points in each of the past six weeks, while the Kangaroos have only done so in one of their past five matches against sides outside the top eight. At home, back the Roos to cover the line of 8.5 points at $1.91 with top betting sites.
Despite North Melbourne’s struggles, key forward Nick Larkey has booted 39 goals to sit seventh in the Coleman Medal race. The 26-year-old has 20 goals from his past eight games, while he’s kicked three or more on eight occasions this season. Larkey kicked six goals when he last faced the Tigers, so back him to slot four or more at $3.40 with top Australian bookies.
Despite playing the majority of his footy across halfback, Richmond’s Daniel Rioli has emerged as an attacking threat over the last few weeks. He has three goals in his last three games and offers great value to get on the scoreboard again at $2.50 with leading AFL bookmakers.
