No decision yet on Winx’s next move
There has been no decision yet whether triple Cox Plate winner Winx runs again this spring.
A decision whether Winx has another run in Melbourne this campaign is no closer with trainer Chris Waller saying he is yet to speak with her owners or jockey Hugh Bowman.
Winx won a record equalling third Cox Plate on Saturday, stretching her winning sequence to 22, and has the option of the $2 million Emirates Stakes over 2000m at Flemington on Saturday week.
Winx was sent out onto the Flemington training track for a light work-out early on Tuesday morning and Waller said the champion had come through the Cox Plate well and was the same weight as she was before the race.
“All I can tell you is she has pulled up very well,” Waller said.
“That was first and foremost, making sure that she’s coping well with her racing.
“She puts a lot into her races and fortunately she’s coming out the other side in good shape.
“She went into the Cox Plate at 526 kilograms and she came out of the race exactly the same weight. That’s something quite remarkable.
“For them to come out at the same weight, first it tells you they are well going into the race and fit, but most importantly they’re recovering so quickly.”
“She’s had a couple of days at the beach and this morning she went out for a light jog on the track and was picture perfect.”
Winx has joined Kingston Town as a three-time winner of Australasia’s premier weight-for-age race.
In extending her remarkable winning streak, the mare also joined Black Caviar on an Australian record 15 Group One wins and surpassed Makybe Diva’s prize money haul.
Waller said he would make a decision on immediate plans for Winx later this week, and reiterated the horse would come first.
“I anticipated having it done now but there’s been no discussion between myself and the jockey, and I haven’t said anything more than congratulations to the owners and the ‘horse has pulled up well’,” Waller said.
“I’ll put all the cards on the table in front of them.
“Considering it is possibly her sixth run of the preparation, which is certainly the most runs she’s had so far, I’ll put everything in front of them and we’ll make a joint decision in terms of longevity for the horse and obviously for the fans as well.”
