Mum-to-be wins Listed race at Doomben

Jockey Brad Stewart rides NotOnYourLife (far right) to win race 7.
Notonyourlife, who is in foal, has had an upset win in the Listed Ubet Classic at Doomben.

Mum-to-be Notonyourlife has proved her owner Scott McAlpine was correct in wanting her to race on when she won the Listed Ubet Classic at Doomben.

The mare belied her $41 price when she stormed home to beat Our Beebee by half a length on Saturday, with a further length to Slypheed ($4.80) in third.

Notonyourlife was retired to stud this year and is in foal to Eureka Stud sire Spirit of Boom, who won the 2014 Doomben 10,000 for McAlpine and trainer Tony Gollan.

McAlpine – a former president of the Tattersall’s Race Club, which horsed the race meeting – is the studmaster at Eureka Stud.

“I asked Tony (trainer Gollan) to put her back into work with the idea of getting some black type for her,” McAlpine said.

“Tony has done a great job to get her to win today.”

Gollan said he rarely raced mares who were in foal but took the advice of McAlpine.

“Notonyourlife is very well bred and to get black type was invaluable for her,” Gollan said.

“We now have her until February to race so she will follow the traditional fillies and mares races through the summer. Her next start will probably be the Just Now Quality in a fortnight.”

Winning jockey Brad Stewart said Notonyourlife had hit the line very well in the 1200m race and would be suited to a longer distance.

Gollan believes Khamala ($6) will win a stakes race during the summer carnival after she stormed home to win in a three-way photo.

Khalama beat Trubia ($41) by a nose in a benchmark 90 on Saturday, with a half-head to Colinelle ($4.40) in third.

“She didn’t have much luck and probably you would expect she would have got beaten,” Gollan said.

“But that is twice now she has won races when you would have thought at the 200 metres she couldn’t.”

Brooke Stower, on fourth-placed High Cost, alleged interference from Khalama in the last 100m but stewards quickly dismissed the protest.
