Memorable consolation prize for Bullock
Aaron Bullock has notched a first metropolitan win on Sugar Bella at Randwick for trainer Kris Lees.
As consolation victories go, Sugar Bella’s win at Randwick will be hard to beat for Aaron Bullock.
The 27-year-old bounced back from the disappointment of being bumped off rising star Jonker in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast by recording his first city win.
Shortly after Jonker was buffeted out of contention early in the Classic, Bullock saluted on the in-form Sugar Bella for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees after she cruised to a 2-1/4 length triumph in the ATC Owners Benefit Card (1400m).
“It’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had winning on a horse,” Bullock said.
“To do it for Kris Lees is a bonus too. He’s been a great supporter of mine. I wouldn’t be here without him.
“He promised me he’d get me this before Christmas. Thirteen days after New Year is good enough.”
Newcastle-based Bullock rode Jonker to victory in his first two starts but was replaced by Hugh Bowman for the Magic Millions.
Jonker copped the brunt of early interference, hitting the running rail and finishing last.
“I missed out on the ride up there but that’s racing,” Bullock said.
“I’ve come here and got my first city winner. Things couldn’t be better.”
