Melbourne v Collingwood match preview
The final round of the 2024 AFL home-and-away season kicks off this Friday night as Melbourne and Collingwood face off at the MCG.
Last Saturday, the Demons snapped a four-game losing streak, beating the Gold Coast Suns by 54 points on the road. After an even first half, Melbourne took over the match, kicking 10 goals to two after the main break.
Despite the strong result, the Demons were officially ruled out of finals contention last round, as they sit 12th on the AFL ladder. Wrapping up a disappointing season for Simon Goodwin’s men, they enter this game as underdogs at $2.25 with PlayUp.
Melbourne midfielder Tom Sparrow is in doubt this week after suffering an ankle injury against the Suns, but experienced key defender Steven May is expected to return from a rib injury.
Collingwood were also successful last Saturday afternoon, beating the Brisbane Lions by one point at the MCG. Despite trailing for the whole match, the Magpies kicked the last three goals to secure an unlikely victory.
As a result, the Pies have kept their finals hopes alive, but they have a huge percentage gap to make up and need at least two of the four teams directly above them to lose. With three wins from their last four matches, they enter as slight favourites at $1.68 with Bet365.
Don’t expect many changes to Craig McRae’s side this week, as the Pies got through the match against the Lions unscathed.

Melbourne v Collingwood betting strategy
With their season alive by the barest of margins, the Magpies need to win by a substantial margin. They have won five of the last six matches between these sides and head into this weekend in much better form, so back Collingwood to cover the line of -6.5 points at $1.91 with top AFL bookmakers.
With their tall stocks suffering from injury problems all season, Demons key forward Jacob van Rooyen has been consistent with 29 goals. Coming off a three-goal effort last weekend, he also kicked three when these sides met in round 13. At $2.20 with leading online bookies, back van Rooyen to continue his good form with two or more goals.
Collingwood ruckman Darcy Cameron has been in excellent form while also hitting the scoreboard, kicking goals in three of his last four games. He is a great contested mark and offers great value to split the big sticks at $2.90 with top Australian betting sites.
