The Melbourne Stars will clash with the Sydney Sixers for the second time in BBL 12 at the MCG on Friday night.
The Sixers won comfortably in their first clash and sit just one point off the top of the BBL ladder, while the Stars will need to start putting a big winning streak together to help avoid missing the finals series.
The Sixers have spent most of their season at the SCG where they have won all their matches and struggled to win on the road. The Stars on the other hand have had only two wins for the season, which both came at the MCG. Will the Stars be able to continue their strong form at home, or will the Sixers be able to mend their record when playing away from home to get the win?
In their last match against the Renegades, it was only a superstar effort from Tom Rogers, who took 5/14, that stopped the Stars from winning at home. Should the Stars return to their best form on their home ground, they have the star power to beat this Sixers side, who have lost recently to the Heat. The Stars are great value for the punters to win this match paying $2.25 with online bookmakers.
Marcus Stoinis has struggled this BBL to find form with his only impressive innings coming in a man of the match performance against the Scorchers where he hit 74 runs from 34 balls with six sixes. The key to Stoinis’ innings is avoiding spin bowlers.
Typically, the Sixers only carry one full time spin bower, Stephen O’Keeffe, who bowls his overs early in the innings to capitalise on fielding restrictions. Should the Stars get through overs early without losing wickets, Stoinis will not be subject to spin bowling early and is every chance of being the sides highest run scorer paying $4.25.
Stars captain Adam Zampa has also struggled to date in his new role for the franchise. Zampa is one of the world’s best T20 spin bowlers and excels bowling on bigger grounds like the MCG.
The bigger grounds allow Zampa to think his way through his overs more where he can set batters up better to attack for wickets. The bigger boundaries also make hitting boundaries more difficult, where he can also pick up wickets. Look for Zampa to step up for the big occasion on his home ground and take 3+ wickets for the Stars paying $5.75.
Key match-up – Josh Philippe v Joe Clarke
The battle of these two wicket-keeper batsmen will be key to deciding the outcome of the match. Both players are excellent glovemen who seldom drop any chances they are given, making them difficult to split in the field.
With the bat, they are incredibly aggressive players who can score all around the ground and against any type of bowling. In a perfect world for the fans, both players will bat at their dynamic best, but realistically, only one will be able to dominate this match. Whomever is able to get into their innings and do the most damage at their top of the order for their side will put their franchise in the box seat to win.
