Melbourne Stars vs Melbourne Renegades BBL13 preview
A Melbourne Derby kicks off the new year at the MCG, with the in-form Melbourne Stars hosting the Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday evening for Match 23 of the Big Bash League season.
The Melbourne Renegades recorded their first win of the season on Friday in stylish fashion, thanks to a few standout performances. Afghanistan international Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the best on the ground with the ball in hand, taking three wickets in his four overs, conceding just 20 runs, and bowling 13 dot balls. Mujeeb was well supported by Adam Zampa, who was economical; however, the man-of-the-match batting performance from Jake Fraser-McGurk blew the Strikers away. The 21-year-old belted 70 runs from 37 balls, including five 4’s and four 6’s, to ensure a four-wicket win with eight balls to spare.
Joe Clarke retired hurt in the Renegades match against the Strikers before returning late in the innings to close out the run chase. Reports suggest he has suffered a quad strain. However, the Renegades have yet to confirm his injury status or availability for the remainder of the BBL13 season.
The Melbourne Stars started their BBL13 season looking like they may never win a game all summer. That was until a four-wicket win over the Sixers in Sydney, led by Pakistan imports Haris Rauf and Usama Mir, began a three-match winning streak. The Stars beat the Hurricanes in Hobart before belting the Strikers in Adelaide on New Year’s Eve. Englishman Dan Lawrence and Beau Webster got the run-chase off to a solid start before player-of-the-match Marcus Stoinis returned to his devastating best form, smashing 55 runs from 19 balls with six 4’s and four 6’s.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been left out of the Renegades squad for this match after changes to his central contract with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and his No-Objection Certificate (NOC) conditions

Melbourne Stars vs Melbourne Renegades betting predictions
Recent history suggests the Renegades should be favourites to win this match, given the visitors have won four of their last five matches against the hosts, with two of those wins coming at the MCG. However, the home side has been in such strong winning form over the last week they are impossible to ignore. Adding Dan Lawrence to a side with all-rounders Beau Webster, Hilton Cartwright, Stoinis, and captain Glenn Maxwell makes them an incredibly dangerous side. Backing the Stars to win at home is the safest bet for this match (-138.89).
Captain Maxwell has played in two of the three Stars wins, taking five wickets with the ball in those matches. The skipper often bowls early in the innings where powerplay restrictions entice batters to play big shots that often lead to mis-hits or complete misses. Bowling to the Renegades’ top order is a bonus for Maxwell, as they’re expected to have left-handers Quinton De Kock and Shaun Marsh in the side, which will only boost Maxwell’s chances of taking 2+ wickets (+130) in the match.
Beau Webster has batted in two of the last three matches for the Stars, where he has played a pivotal role in the success of the franchise. The all-rounder strode to the crease early against the Sixers where he anchored the run-chase and was dismissed, before leading the run-scoring for his side on New Year’s Eve in Adelaide. Webster is an incredible value bet to score 25+ runs in his innings against the Renegades at +130 with top cricket bookmakers.
