McLaren prove too strong against Red Bull at F1 Singapore GP
The 2024 Singapore Formula One (F1) Grand Prix (GP) on Sunday, September 22, was another McLaren brilliance with a stunning 20.9s win, lets take a look at what this action meant for punters.
Favourite punters would have had the easiest watch here in Singapore after Lando Norris led every single lap and never looked as if he could be beat. He was paying as much as +175 for the win with the leading F1 bookmakers, as predicted in our Singapore betting guide.
Ferrari executed an impressive ‘damage limitation’ strategy by successfully overtaking at least one of the Mercedes cars, specifically Lewis Hamilton’s.
Both drivers managed some extra points, finishing in P5 for Charles Leclerc and P7 for Carlos Sainz jr.
After the unsuccessful qualification for Ferrari punters prior to FP3 had odds for Charles Leclerc as short as -175.44 for a podium but post Qualification was as far as +900 with Neds Bookmaker.
Mercedes left speechless after a very poor strategy move saw seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton start the race on softs and had to pit early after high tire degradation and finished P6 after starting P3.
Lewis Hamilton was as low as -200 for a podium finish after Qualification with PlayUp Bookmaker.
2024 Singapore GP Biggest Winners
P1 – Lando Norris (McLaren) – Norris enjoyed a relatively easy win, despite some scares from locking up and near wall contact. He managed to secure a free pit stop without losing the lead.
We’ve seen this season how fast the MCL38 is already but Norris now has the largest win this season at +20.945s, overtaking previously held by main rival Max Verstappen.
P3 – Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – After a poor Qualificaiton session to his standards, Piastri was able to stand on the podium once again after moving from P5 to P3 during the race with some stunning overtakes.
He has the most points scored over the last eight races and makes you wonder who McLaren should be prioritising for next years Drivers Championship.
Ferrari (P5 and P7) – Their poor Qualification performance had both drivers starting at the bottom of the top 10 shootout but both drivers were able to clear through the field here and finish in P5 and P7.
Great strategy from the Ferrari pit wall gave them a great points haul all things considered.
2024 Singapore GP Biggest Blunders
Mercedes (P4 and P6) – A horrible outing for the Petronas crew, mainly from the strategy team.
They opted to split the two drivers for tires and gave Hamilton Slick tires and George Russell the medium tires.
Mercedes had hoped for more battling at the front for Hamilton to clean up the mess on the slicks.
No early safety cars led to Hamilton destroying his tires and forced into an early pit stop, ruining his chances in the race.
Hamilton dropped to P6, whilst Russell stayed at P4.
P20 – Alex Albon (Williams) – Sadly for Albon, he lost too many positions at the start of the race then was forced to retire the car after a power unit cooling issue forcing the car to overheat.
Williams had more pace than previous races here in Singapore and feels like a lost opportunity here for them.
P12 – Yuki Tsunoda (VCARB) – His poor start cost him four positions almost immediately, which effectively decided his race. With the track already challenging for overtaking and the VCARB cars struggling with pace, scoring points became impossible.
2024 Singapore Biggest Surprise
P11 – Franco Colapinto (Williams) – Two weeks in a row, he’s been able to surprise all viewers.
A strong start saw the Williams driver gain four positions from turn one after a prime Ricciardo-like divebomb.
In one of the hardest physical races of the year and only his third race, he continues to impress.
Sadly for the Argentine, there’s not many seats left for next year and will likely be sidelined as the reserve driver after the 2024 season.
