McDonald to face NSW stewards over charge

Jockey James McDonald is set to face stewards over a betting charge after an investigation of telephone, betting and financial records.

McDonald, who stood down as Godolphin’s retained jockey in Australia on November 15, has been charged with having an interest in a bet on Astern who he rode to win on debut at Randwick in December last year.

Racing NSW Stewards said McDonald along with a “number of parties” had been asked to attend interviews this week.

Anthony Gardiner, the punter implicated in the investigation, has not responded to stewards’ request for an interview.

Gardiner has been warned off by Racing NSW meaning he is not allowed to enter any racecourse or training facility, is unable to have an interest in any thoroughbred racehorse nor is he able to place a bet on thoroughbred races with a wagering operator.

Following this week’s interviews stewards will set a date for the inquiry into McDonald’s charge.
