McDermott stars as Hurricanes beat Strikers by 11 runs

Hobart Hurricanes Defeat Strikers

The Hobart Hurricanes have jolted their BBL campaign to life, smashing the biggest total of the BBL season so far as they beat the Adelaide Strikers on Friday night in Adelaide.

Coming into their third match of the tournament, the Hurricanes were $2.35 underdogs to win across most cricket betting apps.

However, Hobart grabbed the bull by the horns and put on a brilliant 5/214 in the first innings.

The total came courtesy of a blazing 68 from 34 by Ben McDermott, together with cameos of 37 from 22 from Shai Hope and 33 from 14 by Tim David.

“We know this is a high scoring ground and we targeted a boundary an over,” player-of-the-match McDermott explained afterwards.

“[Tim David] is brilliant.

“He is picked up all around the world and there is a reason for that.

“He came out and just whacked it.

“We started pretty well.

“We played the right way.”

In response, Adelaide threatened to do what the Sixers had done the night before, and immediately set a new record for the season’s highest total.

Both Matthew Short (52 from 29) and D’Arcy Short (41 from 22) were impressive at the top of the order, taking the Strikers out to 0/76 from just six overs.

Strong contributions from Chris Lynn (19 from 13) and Ollie Pope (39 from 27) kept the scoreboard moving forward, and with 57 runs needed from 24 balls, live cricket betting odds had swung in Adelaide’s favour.

However, tight overs from Riley Meredith and Chris Jordan pumped the asking rate up to 39 from 12, which then became 31 from six balls after Nathan Ellis executed an excellent penultimate over.

Jamie Overton (30 from 16) gave Hobart fans brief reason for concern in the final over, sending the first two balls of the over for 10 runs.

But when back-to-back deliveries from Jordan denied boundaries, the Hurricanes were in the clear to claim an 11-run win.

With Hobart now on two wins from three games, cricket bookmakers have shortened their title odds to $9 – the sixth line of betting.

Adelaide Strikers sit one place back in outright odds, returning $12 to win at PlayUp, having won just one of their four matches so far this season.
