Max Holloway (24-7-0) has been unfortunate to compete in the UFC’s featherweight division during the Alexander Volkanovski era. The pair have met on three occasions, with each result going in favour of the Australian champion. Holloway has beaten three credible contenders during the same period – Calvin Kattar, Yair Rodriguez, and Arnold Allen – but has been unable to reclaim the silverware that he owned before the Volkanovski reign.
A move up to the lightweight division ended badly for the Hawaiian in 2019, when he was soundly beaten by Dustin Poirier. So, until something changes at the top of the 145-pound weight class, Holloway must play a gatekeeping role if he intends to remain active.
Holloway is a tough assignment for almost anyone. He is long and rangy with excellent striking and sets a pace that can break even the most seasoned athletes. The 31-year-old is hard to take down, understands the MMA scoring system, and his extensive experience is often too much for younger fighters on the rise. He lands strikes from opportune angles and his octagon complexity can provide a headache for less cerebral combatants.
Jung Chan-sung (17-7-0) earned his nickname, ‘The Korean Zombie’, by relentlessly walking down opponents regardless of what was being thrown in his direction. This approach has recently proved less successful, with losses to Volkanovski, Brian Ortega, and Yair Rodriguez. During this period, he did record solid wins over Renato Moicano, Frankie Edgar, and Dan Ige.
The Zombie has 14 stoppage victories on his record – six via knockout and eight by submission. He is a talented striker but will need to be at the very top of his game to match Holloway. This may develop into a jabbing war, and the 36-year-old will need to earn respect in this department if he hopes to land his power strikes. Holloway will be throwing at high volume from the opening bell, and The Zombie will need to ensure he matches this output.
Max Holloway v The Korean Zombie betting predictions
Holloway has never been knocked out during his long career and beats many opponents by overwhelming their defences with a non-stop standup barrage. He landed 141 strikes in a single round against Calvin Kattar, a UFC record. The Zombie will need to fire back with harder blows, dance in and out of range, and get his head off the centre line to counter Holloway’s proven strategy. Top UFC bookmakers have this contest priced as a walk in the park for the Hawaiian, and against a tough and durable opponent, a decision victory appears the most likely outcome.
