The championship game for the Men’s NCAA March Madness Tournament is set for Tuesday (AEST) between the eighth-seeded University of North Carolina and first-seeded University of Kansas. To last this long in the tournament, both teams have shown flashes of why they should win the tournament, but there will only be one team that will come out on top.
The Cinderella Story continues for the Tar Heels. After beating Marquette in the first round, UNC would go on to the upset top seed and defending champions, Baylor, then the fourth-seeded UCLA. In the Elite Eight, UNC took down Saint Peters to set the stage for a matchup with Duke to go to the championship.
Duke and UNC had met less than a month ago in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game, and the stadium was filled with so much emotion as Krzyzewski would be calling it a career after 42 years as the head coach. Despite all the emotion surrounding Duke, it would be UNC who would take that game 94-81, setting the momentum for a deep tournament run. It was clear at tip off how much this Final Four matchup had meant to both of these teams, but again in true Tar Heel fashion, they would take down Duke in a close game 81-77 ending coach Krzyzewski’s head coaching career for good.

As UNC heads into the championship game, they are matched up with a lethal Kansas squad that looks to be unbeatable. Though they haven’t faced the talent that UNC has proven to beat, Kansas did something that so many teams struggle to do they beat the teams that they should beat. Despite the inability to win big games in the past, Kansas has taken care of business all year long to this point. The Jayhawks have beaten Texas Southern, Creighton, Providence, Miami, and now Villanova in the tournament. Kansas has been heavy favorites in most of these matchups but has lived up to the hype despite their struggles in years past.
They shot the lights out against a frisky Villanova team led by Ochai Agbaji who was six of seven from three point range and finished with 21 points. As a team, the Jayhawks shot almost 55% from deep which could prove to be lethal for UNC if they continue to shoot this way. On top of that, Kansas forward David McCormack provided several posters and led the team with 25 points.
It’s likely that this matchup is going to be a shoot-out of sorts, similar to UNC’s matchup against Baylor. Kansas and UNC have been two of the best offenses in the tournament, and it should be on full display on Monday night. It’s hard to argue against Kansas, as they have been the better team all season long, if there’s one team that has shown they have the upset gene it’s UNC. They are the hottest team on the planet right now and after all, March loves an underdog.
