Maher to front RAD over owner bona fides

A date has been set for a Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board hearing on penalty into the ownership bona fides of five horses from the stables of Ciaron Maher.

Through his legal representatives, the Caulfield-based trainer said he would plead guilty to a Racing Victoria stewards charge.

Stewards have laid a charge involving the ownership of horses Azkadellia, Little Bubulu, Loveable Rogue, Hart and Mr Simples.

They allege Maher’s conduct was prejudicial to the image, interests or welfare of racing.

Group One winner Azkadellia and the four other horses were all raced in the name of Ben Connolly, Maher’s former racing manager, who stood down from his position with the stable 12 months ago.

The RAD Board will hold the penalty hearing on September 25.

The scratching of Cosmic Lights from a race at Flemington has led to registered owner Rory Button having to front the RAD Board on Friday.

RV stewards have charged Button after he allegedly recorded a voice message which was sent to several licensed people, including jockey Stephen Baster.

The contents of the recording, stewards allege, constitute misconduct, improper conduct or unseemly behaviour.

Stewards allege the recording was delivered following the scratching of Cosmic Lights at Flemington on August 5.
