Liam Birchley to step down from training
Controversial trainer Liam Birchley will close his Brisbane stable.
Prominent trainer Liam Birchley will close his Brisbane stable next month.
Birchley has confirmed he will no longer be a trainer but from next week will have another role in the industry.
“But I can’t say anything else,” he told AAP.
Birchley has sent a letter to owners outlining his plans which has been widely circulated on social media and in racing circles.
He has been training on a stay in Queensland and Victoria after being disqualified for a year in the Aquanita investigation.
He has been barred from training in NSW which has cost him three black-type wins with his horses transferred to other trainers to run in those races.
Toby Edmonds is credited with training Havasay to win the past two Ramornie Handicaps at Grafton.
The ban on Birchley-trained horses in NSW also means the Archer Park horses have not been able to run for BOBs bonuses in NSW.
A result of Birchley’s appeal on his disqualification is expected in the next few months.
In the letter, Birchley informed owners he would take on a new role developing the Archer Park complex as a spelling and training facility.
Archer Park is located north of Brisbane where many of Birchley’s horses are stabled.
Birchley said he would also concentrate on yearling selection.
His current team of horses will now be trained by the Toby and Trent Edmonds partnership or Chris Munce.
“I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the owners who have stuck solid over the past 20 months,” Birchley said in the letter.
Birchley has been one of Queensland’s leading trainers in the past 20 years with more than 1000 winners.
