Leverkusen clinch late win over Inter in Champions League
Inter Milan were handed their first Champions League defeat of the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday (AEDT), losing 1-0 to Bayern Leverkusen in Germany.
With the evenly contested encounter looking set to end goalless, French defender Nordi Mukiele smashed home a 90th-minute winner for the Bundesliga champions.
The win ensured Xabi Alonso’s side moved second on the table with 13 points, five points behind leaders Liverpool, ahead of the final league-phase matches against Atletico Madrid and Sparta Prague.
The Nerazzurri, who dropped to fourth with 13 points, will face Sparta Prague and AS Monaco in their remaining matches.
Although Simone Inzaghi was disappointed by the performance, the Inter head coach admitted it didn’t undermine their accomplishments thus far.
“It wasn’t one of our best performances,” Inzaghi said.
“We were up against a very good team.
“We lacked quality in the final third. It’s disappointing to lose the match in this manner, but it doesn’t damage what we’ve done so far.”
Leverkusen turn their attention to the Bundesliga this weekend, with top bookie Marantelli Bet paying -161.29 for the defending champions to beat Augsburg (+450).
Meanwhile, soccer betting sites have Internazionale pegged as +117 favourites for their mouthwatering Serie A fixture against Lazio (+235).
