Kyrgios & Kokkinakis retire, Australian Open campaign ends early
Nick Kyrgios is undecided about his future in tennis after he and Thanasi Kokkinakis were forced to retire injured from their doubles match at the Australian Open on Thursday evening in Melbourne.
The Australian duo painted a sorry picture for a set and a half against compatriots Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth, with Kyrgios nursing an ab injury and Kokkinakis unable to serve full strength due to a pectoral tear.
It was the latter than forced them to retire injured at 7-5, 3-2 down in the second set after just one hour on court.
“I wanted to see if I was somewhat competitive, even without a serve,” said Kokkinakis, who had struggled with injury in his second-round loss to Jack Draper on Wednesday.
“Just wanted to get on court again with the big fella. Such great memories.
“We had a big crowd we knew waiting for us.
“Any other event, any other circumstance, I’m not stepping foot on court, for sure.”

Kokkinakis and Kyrgios defied odds across tennis betting apps three years ago when they won the 2022 Australian Open doubles title.
Speaking after the match, Kyrgios explained that doubles will likely be his focus moving forward in the sport.
“I think we, on full potential and full health, could do some damage in the doubles always,” he said, before elaborating on his own future.
“For me, obviously this year I’ve been out for a year and a half, two years, so I don’t know what this year’s going to bring.
“Obviously I’m going to trust the process.
“I think I’m hitting the ball great. I’ve still got a long way to get back to that same level I was in 2022.
“For me personally, I couldn’t see myself playing more than probably this year high-level singles anymore.
“The maintenance, I think he knows, four, five hours on the treatment table every day to not even have the guarantee to be healthy to play a week of tennis.
“I think I’m weighing up my options.
“Doubles is a bit easier on the body. I think we can still play amazing doubles.”
In a telling shift, the top online bookmakers have removed Kyrgios from their 2025 US Open outright betting market.
The Australian was paying as high as the ninth line of tennis betting at the start of the season.
