Knights v Broncos match preview
The Broncos will be looking to break a run of six-straight defeats on Saturday when they head to Newcastle to face the Knights in round 20 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.
The Knights are underdogs at $2.25 with BoomBet after they suffered their biggest loss of the season last Sunday, going down to the Sea Eagles by 38 points. Conceding four tries in each half, Adam O’Brien’s side struggled in defence and managed just one late consolation try.
Newcastle have now dropped to 10th spot on the ladder, two points outside the top eight. However, with a terrible points difference and a tough run to end the season, top NRL bookmakers give them long odds of $5.50 to make the finals.
The Knights have named Bradman Best, Dane Gagai and Kalyn Ponga all to back up from Wednesday’s State of Origin clash. There could be late changes, however, as both Best and Gagai played the full 80 minutes in Brisbane. Second-rower Brodie Jones is one confirmed out after suffering a head knock, with Jack Hetherington named as his replacement.
Last Saturday, the Broncos went down to the Dragons by four points in a high-scoring affair at home. Missing key personnel due to Origin, Kevin Walters’ side never recovered after conceding five of the first six tries.
Despite their poor form, Brisbane enter this clash as favourites at $1.72 with Unibet. Although they sit 13th on the ladder, online bookies are giving last year’s grand finalists odds of $2.10 to make the top eight.
The Broncos have made no changes to their 17 this week, with all of their representative players listed in the reserves. Star halfback Adam Reynolds has also been added to the emergencies, but he is not expected to play.

Knights v Broncos betting strategy
Although they suffered an embarrassing loss against the Sea Eagles, the Knights had won their previous two matches to emerge as finals candidates. While the Broncos won’t have any changes, Newcastle will have Ponga returning to fullback. In front of their home crowd, the Knights offer good value to win by less than 13 points at $3.30 with leading rugby league bookies.
Last week’s high-scoring loss was an anomaly for the Broncos, who averaged just 11.5 points per game in the four weeks prior. Also, the Knights have gone under the total points line in three of their last four matches. With both sides missing substantial attacking talent, back this game to go under 47.5 total points at $1.90 with top sports betting sites.
A clear problem for the Broncos in recent weeks has been their right-hand side, where opposition wingers have scored in each of their past seven games. Playing on the right side for the Knights is rookie Krystian Mapapalangi, who comes off an impressive 145 run metres against the Sea Eagles in his first start on the wing. This is the perfect opportunity for the 21-year-old to score his first NRL try, which is paying $2.15 with Bet365.
