Key step for Mr Marbellouz at Doomben

Mr Marbellouz will begin his campaign to the Weetwood in earnest when he runs at Doomben.

Speedy gelding Mr Marbellouz takes a key step in a year-long plan when he runs over 1200 metres at Doomben.

Trainer Kevin Kemp has been planning an assault on the Listed Westwood Handicap since Mr Marbellouz failed to make Toowoomba’s elite sprint last year because his rating was too low.

The campaign steps up a notch in Saturday’s Wedding’s At Tattersall’s Club Open Handicap after a long 12 months for Kemp who is hopeful Mr Marbellouz can join his four other winners of the Weetwood.

At the time of the 2018 Weetwood, Mr Marbellouz had won six of his seven starts and it was a controversial measure when he failed to gain a start in the race.

Mr Marbellouz was injured in a race at the Gold Coast in May and was given a long spell before resuming for fourth to Spurcraft at the Sunshine Coast on January 26.

He was then second to Spurcraft at Doomben two weeks ago when he raced deep for most of the race.

“He has been looking for 1200 metres and he came from a wide barrier last start. This time we are drawn much better,” Kemp said.

“I love to win the Weetwood and if he can win on Saturday he should be right to make he field.”

Kemp was in form on Wednesday when his $51 shot Zou Der Zee won at Doomben but Mr Marbellouz will be far more popular with punters and is likely to start odds on.
