Jeff Lloyd brings up 150 Queensland wins

Premier jockey Jeff Lloyd rode his 150th Queensland winner for the season with one of his best rides on Cantbuybetter at Doomben on Saturday.

Betterbuybetter drew barrier nine but after the field had gone 400m Lloyd was over on the fence in behind the pace in the Listed Singapore Turf Club Members Handicap (1600m).

He then got a gap on the fence and came away to beat Emphasis by two lengths with a short neck to the favourite Jumbo Prince.

Lloyd said Cantbuybetter was a nice horse when he could get tempo in his races.

“He pulled hard last start but the pace was much stronger today which suited him,” Lloyd said.

He is now only three wins off Chris Munce’s state record of 153 winners for the season having already broke Munce’s record for city wins with 115.

Trainer Ben Currie was full of praise for both rider and horse.

“I have always said Cantbuybetter was potentially the best horse I have ever had. But there have been a lot of problems with him,” Currie said.

“I never lost faith that he would win a stakes race and I think there are more to come.”

Currie said Cantbuybetter was a big horse and he had believed he may have been soft at his previous start.

“We made certain he was ready to race at his best today,” Currie said.

“And it was a great ride by Jeff. Although I thought he was going to stay away from the fence. That must have changed mid-race.”
