Jason Demetriou given temporary reprieve by Rabbitohs
Jason Demetriou, the current coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, has received an extension as head coach for at least the upcoming two games.
The team has had a rough start to the season, losing five out of six matches, leading to scrutiny of Demetrious’ position.
Following a 34-22 defeat against Cronulla on Saturday, the club has decided to give him another opportunity to steer the team in the right direction.
Demetriou will continue leading the team in their next match against the Melbourne Storm on Anzac Day and during the following week in Round 9 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.
The club plans to evaluate his performance in these games against the Storm and Penrith Panthers before making a call on his future.
Despite facing injuries that left them with 14 players at one point during their match against the Sharks, Demetriou commended his team’s effort and expressed his intention to continue coaching unless otherwise advised.
The pressure had been building up on the 48-year-old coach, especially after he abruptly ended a press conference after 27 seconds last Friday.
However, Demetriou clarified that all speculations surrounding him have not been too distracting.
Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga, who has been rumoured to be considering the Rabbitohs coaching position, mentioned that it felt a bit uncomfortable to discuss the matter but confirmed that the club had not reached out to him yet.
The Rabbitohs will have 12 days of rest between games as they are set to have a bye in round 7.
With Demetrious future in doubt and Rabbitohs performance lacking, the top NRL betting sites currently have them at $51 odds to claim the 2024 NRL Premiership.
