Jarome Luai confirms move to Wests Tigers in 2025
In an anticipated announcement, Jarome Luai, the halfback for the Penrith Panthers, has revealed that he will be making a move to join the Wests Tigers for the 2025 NRL Premiership.
During a press conference, Luai shared that he has signed a five-year contract with the Tigers worth over $6 million. This decision holds importance for both clubs involved.
The Wests Tigers have successfully secured a sought-after player they have been pursuing for some time now.
On the other hand, the Panthers face the challenge of finding a replacement for one of their key players who played an instrumental role in their premiership victory.
Luai expressed emotions about leaving Penrith, describing it as one of the decisions he has had to make in his career.
However, he also acknowledged the potential for financial growth that this move presents. The Wests Tigers initially celebrated this signing by sharing an image of Luai wearing their jersey on social media.
However, due to objections from the Panthers, they later deleted it.
This incident highlights some of the complexities within the NRL transfer system, which allows players to sign with teams in advance. Luais departure adds to the list of players leaving Penrith recently.
Among them are Stephen Crichton and Jack Wighton, who have joined clubs such as the Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs, respectively. The Penrith Panthers have recognised that salary cap limitations played a role in Luais decision, and they are disappointed but respectful of his choice. Previously, NRL leader Phil Gould suggested implementing trade windows and a draft system to address the challenges of player movement.
Luais press conference comes after Penrith decided not to exercise their right to respond during the 10-day cooling-off period, making an effort to keep him. The Wests Tigers, who haven’t made it into the top eight since 2011, are hopeful about the impact Luai will have on their team.
Coach Benji Marshall praised Luais experience and character.
He expressed his excitement for his arrival in 2025. As the NRL season progresses, attention turns to the World Club Challenge against the Wigan Warriors and Penriths goal of defending their premiership title.
Despite players leaving, Penrith remains committed to sustaining success and forming a team for the future.
