Jannik Sinner favourite for US Open title after shock results

US Open News - Jordan Thompson upsets Hubert Hurkacz

It has been a tumultuous past 72 hours at the US Open, with two of the top three seeds in the men’s draw crashing out as both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic suffered shock upsets on days five and six of the tournament in New York.

With big names like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune and Hubert Hurkacz already bowing out earlier in the week, the result is that tennis betting sites now have a clear favourite to win the US Open: Jannik Sinner.

The world No.1 came into the year’s final Grand Slam in the third line of betting, paying $4 to win what would be his second major of 2024.

Both Djokovic ($2.80) and Alcaraz ($3) were narrowly in front of Sinner, considering their recent form at the Olympics and Wimbledon.

Now, however, few threats remain in the men’s draw for Sinner, putting him at $2.25 to win the title.

Sinner is not the only player to receive a boost to their chances of winning the US Open with the exits of Alcaraz and Djokovic.

Former finalist Alexander Zverev and 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev now sit at $4.33 and $4.75 respectively.

Zverev is on the opposite side of the draw to Sinner and faces what should be a straightforward path to the final now that he does not need to contend with Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Medvedev, however, would need to overcome Sinner himself if he is to win the title, with the pair on course to meet in the quarter-finals.

The major reshuffle in the US Open betting odds has also brought openings for other players too.

Notably, Britain’s Jack Draper has moved up into the fifth line of betting, behind Taylor Fritz.

The 22-year-old has long been rated as a future top-10 talent and now has the chance to make the semi-finals of a Grand Slam without having to play a top-five player.

His likely quarter-final opponent, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, is another beneficiary of this week’s upsets.

The Aussie was paying $67 to win pre-tournament but is a $21 quote with top sports bookmakers and sits on the sixth line of betting.
