Jameka didn’t stay 3200m: Hall

The distance of Australia’s most famous horse race has proved too far for the lone Australian-bred runner in this year’s Melbourne Cup.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka was striving to become the first horse since Ethereal 15 years ago to claim the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups double,.

But her jockey Nick Hall said the four-year-old didn’t run out the 3200m.

“Her campaign was good. The ride was good. She just didn’t stay,” Hall said.

“She’s still a young mare and probably needs a bit of grounding.”

Jameka finished 14 lengths from the winner Almandin in 15th place.

Jameka had powered away with the $3 million Caulfield Cup over 2400m and was sent out the second favourite at $8.50 on Tuesday with eventual third placegetter Hartnell the $5.50 favourite.
