Israel Adesanya pleads guilty to drunk driving charge
Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has expressed his regrets after pleading guilty to a drunk driving charge in New Zealand.
The incident took place on August 19, 2023, in Auckland, three weeks before Adesanya’s defeat against Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia.
Adesanya’s admission of guilt came to light during his court appearance on Monday.
According to documents, he underwent a blood test, which revealed an alcohol level of 87 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, surpassing New Zealand’s limit of 0.05.
Showing remorse for his actions, the former UFC champion stated, “I deeply regret my decision to drive while under the influence and would like to apologise to the community, my family, and my team.” He clarified that he was pulled over by authorities and emphasised that he does not endorse or support behaviour.
Additionally, he expressed hope that others would learn from his mistake. Adesanya’s sentencing is scheduled for January 10th, 2024.
If convicted, he may face a penalty of either $4,500 or three months of imprisonment. Karl Trotter, the attorney representing him, has requested a discharge without conviction in order to protect the sports star, who’s 34 years old, from having a record.
The fact that Israel Adesanya admitted his guilt has attracted attention and serves as a reminder of the repercussions of driving under the influence.
