Hurricanes down Sixers in Hobart to reach BBL14 final

Hurricanes beat Sixers in BBL14 Qualifier

The Hobart Hurricanes have booked their place in the BBL14 final, defeating the Sydney Sixers by 12 runs on Tuesday evening in Hobart.

With just one victory standing between them and the 2024-25 Big Bash League trophy, T20 betting sites have shorted the Hurricanes’ title odds to $1.80.

They entered the qualifying final as moderate favourites across top cricket bookies and lived up to that billing at Bellerive Oval.

It was a collective effort from Hobart, with most of their top and middle order chipping in to take them through to 7/173 after being put in to bat.

Mitchell Owen (36 from 15) and Caleb Jewell (40 from 41) got the hosts off to a fast start, taking them to 47 without loss from the first four overs.

Owen fell on the first ball of the fifth and was soon followed by Matthew Wade (4 from 7).

However, Jewell and Ben McDermott (42 from 31) then built nicely, putting on 52 runs for the third wicket.

Tim David (25 from 10) came to the crease for a typically explosive cameo after Jewell was bowled by Ben Dwarshuis, as did Nikhil Chaudhary (14 from 11) following McDermott’s dismissal a few balls later.

The latter fell in the final over, but not before ensuring that the Hurricanes posted a competitive total.

In response, the Sixers were in trouble early as the Hurricanes’ bowlers tore through their top order.

Josh Philippe (0 from 2), Jack Edwards (0 from 3) and Moises Henriques (1 from 5) all fell inside three overs, leaving the visitors reeling at 3/5.

Kurtis Patterson (48 from 33) and Jordan Silk (57 from 44) then put on a 75-run stand to keep Sydney in the match.

While Lachlan Shaw (33 from 25) and Dwarshuis (16 from 8) made valiant efforts late in the chase, it was too little, too late for the Sixers.

“There are good and bad ways to lose,” Henriques said after the match.

“Tonight, I felt was one of the good ones, you know, from the position we were in, to fight like we did in that partnership of Jordan and KP (Patterson).”

Next up, the Sixers will play the winner of Wednesday’s eliminator final — where the Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Stars — for a spot in the grand final.

Top bookie Bet365 has the in-form Stars pegged as $1.65 favourites, with the Thunder at $2.25 to advance.
