Hobart Hurricanes secure top spot with win over Renegades

Hobart Hurricanes defeat Renegades

The Hobart Hurricanes tightened their grip on top spot in the Big Bash League standings on Tuesday night, beating the Melbourne Renegades by four wickets despite a valiant innings by Jacob Bethell at Bellerive Oval.

The visitors batted first and made a slow start, slipping to 3/23 after five overs courtesy of some sharp bowling by pacer Riley Meredith, who ended with figures of 3/36.

With Josh Brown (6 from 10), Marcus Harris (1 from 6) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (7 from 7) all back in the shed, Bethell (87 from 50) and Tim Seifert (24 from 23) knuckled in for a handy 46-run partnership.

The former was crucial in giving the Renegades a competitive total, helping rip 20 runs off the penultimate over to haul them through to 7/154.

However, as Big Bash bookmakers expected, the Hurricanes’ batting line up was too strong for Melbourne’s bowling.

It was a team effort to chase down the target of 155 with two balls and four wickets to spare.

Mitchell Owen (24 from 14) provided a fast start, Nikhil Chaudhary (36 from 27) and Matthew Wade (36 from 23) motored along in the middle overs, while Tim David (24 from 15) finished the job.

Despite his side losing, Bethell was handed the player-of-the-match award and gave his reflections on what cost the Renegades afterwards:

“I think we did well to drag it that close, having made a few mistakes in the field,” he said.

“It was one of them that we never felt we had enough when we were going to have to make it work.”

The result further shortens Hobart’s title odds across most cricket betting sites, with Marantelli Bet paying $2.62 for them to win their maiden title in 2025.

The Renegades, however, are all but out of the title conversation.

While they can mathematically still make the post-season, top betting apps pay a long $101 for them to win the title, with a miracle required for them to qualify for the playoffs now.

Up next, the Hurricanes take on the Brisbane Heat on Thursday, and are $2 Marantelli Bet underdogs to win given the short turnaround.

The Renegades also face the Heat next, but have a few days off to reflect on their season with the match to be played on Saturday.
