A super Sunday of BBL action kicks off in Brisbane with the high-flying Heat hosting the Melbourne Stars at The Gabba. The Stars are sweating on the pending return of Marcus Stoinis to the side, while the Heat come into the match full of confidence having won their last three in a row.
The Brisbane Heat’s on field success should be credited largely to the brilliant batting of Matt Renshaw, as well as Spencer Johnson standing up to support Michael Neser in the fast bowling department. Stoinis returning to the Stars line up would bolster their batting stocks, improving their chances of winning largely.
The Melbourne Stars have little to play for as they near the end of the season sitting at the bottom of the BBL ladder. However, for the Heat, they are two wins away from putting themselves in the best position they can to play in the BBL Finals. Staying at home for them is a huge boost against a side they have beaten recently, making the Heat great value to win this match paying $1.70.
Matt Renshaw has been in incredible form in the last fortnight playing a pivotal role with both bat and ball in the Heat’s wins. Renshaw has taken key wickets in the middle overs, but more importantly, stabilised the Heat’s batting order. Renshaw has done a brilliant job of starting steady and scoring the runs at the back end of his innings. The Heat are liable of finding themselves in need to middle order rescuing again which plays right into Renshaw’s hands to be their leading run scorer paying $4.75 with Aussie Bookmakers.
Michael Neser still stands out as the Heat’s best bowler this season, and his numbers only emphasize this. Averaging just over 20 with the ball for the Heat, Neser has one of the best records in the franchise’s history. Neser has already taken down the Stars once this season with his four wicket haul at the MCG. Neser will be the spearhead of the Heat attack again at home and is the best chance of taking 3+ wickets at $4.
KEY MATCH UP: LIAM HATCHER v MICHAEL NESER
The fast bowling battle at The Gabba will be of the highest calibre given the nature of the surface that’s expected to be rolled out. Friday night’s pitch was more suited to slow bowling, however, with hot weather over the weekend, Sunday should be a more typical Gabba wicket. Sunday should be a fast bowler’s paradise with pace and bounce for the quick bowlers which will make batting more difficult. Which ever of these two fast bowlers adjusts better to the behaviour of the wicket will be better equipped to put their side in a winning position.
