Hawthorn v Richmond R23 preview
Hawthorn have a chance to strengthen their position inside the top eight this Sunday afternoon at the MCG when they face the struggling Richmond in round 23 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.
Last Sunday, it was another dominant display from the Hawks as they beat Carlton by 74 points. Hawthorn showed no remorse towards the injury-hit Blues, winning every quarter while keeping their opposition to just five goals for the day.
After winning eight of their last 10 matches, the Hawks have finally pushed their way into the top eight. However, Hawthorn still need to win both of their remaining matches to guarantee a finals finish, and top bookie PlayUp has them at just $1.08 to get the job done this weekend.
There are no changes for the Hawks as coach Sam Mitchell looks to stick with a winning formula. Finn Maginness, Jai Serong and Josh Ward have all been added to the extended squad.
Richmond suffered their eighth consecutive defeat last Sunday, falling to St Kilda by 48 points at Marvel Stadium. Despite staying competitive for two-and-a-half quarters, the Tigers faded late and conceded the last six goals of the match.
With North Melbourne and West Coast both picking up wins in recent weeks, the last-placed Tigers are now clear favourites for the wooden spoon at $1.10 with top AFL bookies. They are also rank outsiders this week at $8.50 with Bet365.
Midfielder Jack Ross looks set to return for Richmond after recovering from a foot injury through the VFL. Jacob Blight and Matt Coulthard have also been added to the squad, while the likes of Kaleb Smith and Seth Campbell are at risk of omission after recent quiet performances.

Hawthorn v Richmond betting strategy
Given the Hawks have won three of their last four matches by over 66 points, we can expect another dominant effort against the last-placed Tigers. It was a 48-point margin when these sides met in round 14, so back Hawthorn to cover the handicap of 44.5 points at $1.90 with top online bookmakers.
Since making his debut in round eight, key forward Calsher Dear has been an excellent addition to the Hawks side. Averaging 1.2 goals per game, the father-son product has kicked multiple goals on six occasions this season — including in round 14 against the Tigers. With Hawthorn expected to dominate again, back Dear to kick two or more goals at $2.35 with leading sports betting sites.
Coming off a season-high 29 disposals, Hawthorn vice-captain Dylan Moore is pressing his case for a maiden All-Australian blazer. He is averaging 24 disposals per game over the past seven weeks and has recorded over 25 touches in four of his last five matches at the MCG. At $2.15 with Bet365, back Moore to continue his good form with 25 or more disposals once again.
