Round 13: Hawthorn v GWS match preview
Hawthorn will be looking to continue their recent run of upsets when they host the GWS Giants in Launceston to kick off Saturday’s AFL action.
Despite playing on the road, the Giants enter as slight favourites at $1.65 with Bet365, whereas the Hawks are paying $2.35 with Unibet. The line is set at just 7.5 points.
Last Saturday, the Hawks secured their fifth win of the season as they beat the Adelaide Crows by 27 points at the MCG. Sam Mitchell’s men were able to keep the visitors to just two goals in the first half, and while Adelaide threatened to make a game of it late, it was a comfortable win in the end.
With four wins in their last five matches, Hawthorn have climbed up to 12th as one of the form sides in the AFL. However, a finals push seems unlikely, with top betting sites giving them odds of $13 for a top-eight finish.
After getting through the Crows game unscathed, there aren’t any forced changes for Hawthorn. However, ruckman Lloyd Meek could return from an ankle injury, which would push Ned Reeves out of side.
The Giants come off their bye last weekend, but in round 11, they were able to break a three-match losing streak with a four-point win over Geelong. Adam Kingsley’s charges led by as much as 31 points in the third term; however, they were pushed right till the end, as Geelong kicked five goals in a row before GWS captain Toby Greene kicked the match-winner.
Sitting in seventh with a game in hand on all the sides around them, the Giants are expected to play a big role in September. Top Australian bookmakers give them odds of $2 to make the top four, while they are third favourites for the premiership at $7.50.
The Giants must make at least two changes this week, as Stephen Coniglio (shoulder) and Harry Perryman (hamstring) will both miss through injury. In better news, Callan Ward and Callum Brown are both available after missing the trip to Geelong.

Hawthorn v GWS Giants predictions
While these sides are separated by a long way on the ladder, the Hawks are in far better form than the Giants. Winners of their past three matches in Launceston, Hawthorn are also much closer to a full-strength side. The hosts offer great value to win by less than 40 points, which is paying $2.60 with Marantelli Bet.
A key part of Hawthorn’s recent change in form has been the availability of midfielder Will Day. After missing the first six weeks of the season, the 22-year-old has been excellent over the past four weeks, averaging 24.8 disposals a game. He has collected 25 or more touches in two of his last three matches against the Giants, so back Day to do it again at $1.90 at top Australian betting sites.
With Coniglio and Kelly missing from the Giants’ midfield, expect 21-year-old Finn Callaghan to spend plenty of time in the middle. Traditionally a wingman, Callaghan has been thrown into centre bounces when needed this season and, as a result, is averaging career-high numbers for disposals. Coming off a 25-disposal game against the Cats, back the Giant to continue his good form with 25 or more again at $2.15 with top AFL bookies.
