Hawthorn v Brisbane R11 preview

Coming off a heartbreaking loss, Hawthorn face another tough test when they host the resurgent Brisbane Lions at Marvel Stadium this Sunday in round 11 of the 2024 AFL season.

Despite dominating for three quarters against Port Adelaide in round 10, the Hawks somehow conspired to lose by a single point at Adelaide Oval. Hawthorn have been a side reborn since round eight, beating the Dogs and Saints before their capitulation against the Power. They have sharpened their kicking accuracy, generated more inside 50s, and cannot be taken lightly by any side.

The Hawks welcome back James Sicily, while Josh Ward, Jack Scrimshaw, Jack Gunston, and Finn Maginness are also included in the extended squad. Small forward Nick Watson will take a mid-season break, while defender Jai Serong has been omitted after having just seven disposals last week.

The Lions tore the hapless Tigers to shreds in round 10, booting 26 goals to win by 119 points at the Gabba. Brisbane look like a much-improved side in recent weeks, with big wins over the Suns and Tigers and an away draw to the Crows. After slow start to the year, they are starting to look like finals contenders once more.

Half-forward Zac Bailey returns for Brisbane, with Brandon Ryan, Henry Smith, James Tunstill, and Darragh Joyce filling out the extended bench. Eric Hipwood will miss this fixture due to suspension, while Shadeau Brain has been omitted after only accumulating six touches in the big win over the Tigers.

Hawthorn v Brisbane betting strategy

The recent Hawthorn improvements cannot be ignored, and they should make this a competitive matchup. The playing group looks fit and focused and will be keen to make amends for the heartbreaking loss in round 10. Hawthorn at the +15.5 line is the tip at $1.90 on Unibet.

Hawthorn ruckman Lloyd Meek has been enjoying a productive season. He had 45 hitouts and 18 disposals against the Power in a stellar all-round performance. Meek is still learning to use his 203cm frame to full advantage, but he has booted five goals in as many weeks and looks a good play to add to that tally at $2.20 on Bet365.

With both sides showing in recent weeks that they are capable of kicking a score, this could be an entertaining game of AFL. Under the roof at Marvel Stadium, there should be no excuses when it comes to handling and ball movement. Back this one to go over 164.5 total points at $1.88 with Neds.
