Hawthorn topple Carlton in AFL Round 2 opener
Hawthorn have extended their perfect start to the 2025 AFL season, defeating Carlton by 20 points at the MCG on Thursday night.
The Hawks, who stormed back from a disastrous 0-5 start last year to feature in September action, are now 3-0 for the first time since their 2014 premiership-winning campaign after a hard-fought 12.8 (80) to 8.12 (60) victory.
Despite an outstanding performance from Carlton’s star ruckman Tom De Koning, who recorded 41 hitouts, 18 disposals, seven clearances, and six score involvements, the Blues couldn’t find enough consistent contributors to secure their first win of the season.
Carlton welcomed back two-time Coleman medalist Charlie Curnow, but the absence of key forward Harry McKay, who withdrew due to illness, proved costly.
Mabior Chol stepped up for Hawthorn, booting three goals, while Nick Watson continued his strong form with two.
The Blues briefly took control in the second quarter, overcoming an early deficit with goals from Brodie Kemp, Zac Williams, and Jack Silvagni.
But Hawthorn responded strongly after half-time, inspired by Jack Gunston’s pivotal third-quarter goals and Jai Newcombe’s influential midfield performance, which featured 32 disposals, 11 tackles, and nine clearances.
The Hawks’ defence, anchored by recruits Josh Battle and Tom Barrass, was resolute under pressure, while Josh Ward and Changkuoth Jiath made the most of their opportunities after initially starting the season outside the best 23.
In challenging conditions at the MCG, both sides struggled to capitalise early, but Hawthorn found composure when it mattered most, restricting Carlton to just two second-half goals.
The result leaves Carlton winless after two rounds, raising early concerns for coach Michael Voss, while Hawthorn continues to build momentum under Sam Mitchell, signalling their intentions as finals contenders in 2025.
Following the win, Hawthorn are $6 favourites with top bookmakers to win the 2025 premiership.
