Hawthorn Hawks vs Sydney Swans AFL Round 7 preview
The Hawthorn Hawks will be aiming for another bold showing when they host the streaking Sydney Swans at the MCG for the last fixture of Round Seven of the AFL.
Hawthorn landed their first win of the 2024 AFL season when they dominated the Kangaroos in Round Six and they will be out to keep the momentum rolling. The young Hawks produced some solid numbers, including a healthy inside 50 count of 63 and 19 marks inside the forward arc. They also landed 12 tackles in their attacking zone to keep the ball locked in the favourable end of the ground. The victory should pump up the confidence levels within the Hawthorn squad.
Hawthorn Hawks will welcome backing their reigning best and fairest Will Day, who will make his first appearance of the season. The gun midfielder will be raring to get his hands on the ball. The mercurial Chad Wingard is inching toward a return from an Achilles tendon rupture and will run out for the reserves this week. Key forward Mitch Lewis will face a late test on his injured knee after missing three straight games.
The Sydney Swans flexed their muscles against the Suns in Round Six piling on seven goals in the third quarter and five in the last to hold onto second spot on the AFL ladder. Sydney are the second most prolific scoring team in the league and they combined to grab an impressive 16 marks inside 50 with Sam Wicks and Will Hayward leading the charge. The retirement of Lance Franklin has not diminished the side’s ability to kick big totals.
Luke Parker will be closely monitored this week after just failing to get up for Round Six. The 31-year-old broke his arm during the off-season and will be a huge addition to the side if he gains approval from the medical team. Dane Rampe will bypass this match with a minor hamstring strain and be aimed at the Round Eight derby against GWS. Tom McCartin, Nick Blakey, and Lewis Melican all received bumps in the win over the Suns but appear eligible for selection.
Hawthorn Hawks v Sydney Swans betting prediction
We are leaning towards the Swans to continue their winning form but not by a huge margin. The young Hawks will have their tails up and should push them all the way. Sydney to win by less than 39.5 points is the tip returning $2.06 on Unibet.
With both the Hawks and Swans booting more than 110 points in Round Six, we are expecting this game to deliver some attacking AFL action. If both sets of forwards can kick truly, we are anticipating a total score that exceeds 170.5 points, which will be good for a $1.88 return on Neds.
Sydney’s Justin McInerney is forging a role as a playmaker with the ability to win the ball and slide forward to loom as a scoring target in the attacking arc. The 23-year-old is averaging six marks per game this season, and if he can land a hanger within scoring range, should have the nerves to find at least one major score. We are tipping him as an anytime goal kicker at $3.05 with the top AFL bookmakers.
