GWS vs West Coast match preview
The GWS Giants have a great chance to get back on the AFL winners’ list and boost their percentage as they host the West Coast Eagles this Sunday afternoon.
At $1.01 with leading online bookmakers, the Giants are the heaviest favourites of the 2025 AFL Premiership season so far. Meanwhile, the Eagles have long odds of $17, with the line sat at 64.5 points.
Those lopsided figures come despite GWS suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday night, when they went down to Hawthorn by 12 points in Launceston. Despite leading by 35 points at quarter-time, GWS struggled for the rest of the game, adding just four goals as they were overrun.
Despite the loss, the Giants remain one of the favourites for the premiership at $7 with top AFL betting sites. They are conceding just 67 points per game this season, while they have a dynamic forward line led by 2024 Coleman Medal winner Jesse Hogan.
On the other hand, the Eagles continued their poor start last Sunday as they lost the Western Derby by 38 points. Despite a tight opening term, the Dockers were far too good, winning every quarter.
This takes West Coast to 0-3 as they sit last on the AFL ladder. The Eagles are well in the mix for the wooden spoon, with top Australian bookies paying $2.75 for Andrew McQualter’s men to finish with the least wins this season.
Hawthorn vs GWS team news
The Giants are tipped to remain unchanged this week, with Callum Brown, Jake Ricciardi and Toby McMullin all being added as emergencies.
The Eagles have been forced to make three changes, with Jeremy McGovern (adductor), Liam Ryan (illness) and Elijah Hewett (calf) all ruled out. As a result, West Coast have named three debutants: midfielder Tom Gross, key defender Sandy Brock and wingman Hamish Davis.
GWS vs West Coast prediction
Looking at form and the odds, this match looks set to be a percentage booster for the Giants. Playing at home against an undermanned Eagles side, this could get very one-sided as the GWS forwards feast on an inexperienced defence. Despite the imposing line of 64.5 points, the Giants have no issue clearing that mark at $1.91 with Bet365.
With McGovern out through injury, Jesse Hogan now looks set to play on debutant Brock in this clash. Hogan has scored nine goals in his last two matches and looks set to have plenty of opportunities inside 50. At $2.30 with BetOnline, back Hogan to continue his good form with four or more goals.
Playing a new role in defence this year, Ryan Maric has been a rare positive for the Eagles so far. He has collected tallies of 26 and 28 disposals in the last two weeks, taking on the role of distributor down back. With McGovern out, he looks set to take even more kick-ins, so back Maric to continue his good form with 25 or more disposals at $2 with Neds.
