GWS is looking to climb back onto the winners’ list when it hosts St Kilda at Giants Stadium on Sunday in a round 10 AFL clash that neither side can afford to lose.
St Kilda will be looking to bounce back after a tough trip to Adelaide that left them bruised, battered, and looking vulnerable to a slide down the table.
After nine rounds GWS look like a side that belongs outside of the top eight. Their wins have come over Adelaide by 16 points, Hawthorn by two, and Sydney by one-point. They have been competitive in several losses including close games against Carlton, Essendon, and the Bulldogs. In round nine they were no match for Collingwood, losing by 65 points, which seems a fair reflection of the gap between the sides.
The Giants are ranked 16th for tackles this season, 18th for clearances, and first for handballs, suggesting a style of play that is easily countered. They fail to win enough of the hard ball, don’t apply enough pressure in defence, and overuse the ball when in possession. Opposition coaches are not going to allow such obvious errors to go unpunished.
St Kilda produced their worst performance of the year in their last outing when they were thumped by 52 points by the Crows at the Adelaide Oval. The Saints were comfortably beaten on several key statistics including the stoppage clearance count 31 to 23, uncontested possessions 289 to 195, and efficiency inside 50 by 64.2% to 42.9%. The Adelaide forward line was on song, booting 19.7.121, but they were afforded too much time and space by the men in red, white, and black.
Saints coach Ross Lyon was prepared to award his side a mulligan on the disappointing effort, but another loss would see the gloss come off their promising start to the season. The Saints play a high disposal brand of football and lead the competition with an average of 398.1 disposals per match. This strategy can be undone by denying them the ball for long periods as the Crows successfully managed.

Giants midfielder Josh Kelly has been one of his side’s top performers in 2023. The club’s vice-captain is averaging 29.3 disposals, 5.4 tackles, 4.6 clearances, and 106.6 AFL Fantasy Points this season and looks to have found a new plateau. While some of his teammates went missing in the big loss to the Magpies, Kelly stood up to the pressure and emerged with another stellar effort from the tough assignment.
St Kilda midfielder Brad Crouch has been integral to his team’s strong start to the season. The former Crow is averaging 27.8 disposals, 5.2 tackles, and 5.4 clearances in 2023 and his bustling work in heavy traffic frees up his teammates to spread and run from the stoppages. Crouch battled manfully in the contest against to Adelaide, emerging with 30 disposals in a losing effort.
Giants v Saints betting strategy & prediction
The Saints go into this match as warm favourites, with the early line set at a skinny 6.5 points. We have all seen St Kilda at their frustrating worst, when they waste the ball and kick endless behinds, but this looks like a winnable contest. The Giants will be buoyed by the likely return of Toby Greene, but we cannot ignore their inferior statistics. If the Saints kick truly for goal, they should easily cover the line.

If you are looking to land some addition value, we suggest linking St Kilda -6.5 points, into Jack Higgins to score two or more goals, into Brad Crouch to get 25 or more disposals, paying $5.15 on Neds Australia.
St Kilda -6.5 points / Jack Higgins 2+ goals / Brad Crouch 25+ possessions
