GWS v St Kilda match preview

Bookmakers believe GWS will maintain their unbeaten start to the AFL season against St Kilda in Canberra on Saturday afternoon.

The Giants are $1.31 to defeat the Saints ($3.45) in what will be the first match at Manuka Oval for the 2024 season. The line has been set at 14.5 which will have bettors interested.

The Giants defeated the Gold Coast Suns by 28 points last Sunday. In their first scare of the year, the Giants trailed late in the third quarter, but showed their quality as they kicked seven goals to two to finish the match. Skipper Toby Greene stood out with a five-goal haul, while the Giants midfield continued their excellent form.

Don’t expect many changes to the side this week with experienced midfielder Callan Ward the only possible inclusion.

The Saints were also winners on Sunday as they defeated Richmond by seven points. Kicking just one goal in the first half, the Saints turned it around, coming back from a 22-point deficit to secure their second win of the season. Leading from the front, Jack Steele continued his hot start to the season with 33 disposals, while Rowan Marshall was excellent in the ruck with 23 touches, 24 hit-outs and a goal.

Expect Saints midfielder Marcus Windhager to return to the side following a suspension, with first gamer Angus Hastie the likely omission after he didn’t touch the footy against the Tigers.

GWS v St Kilda betting tips

Undefeated and on top of the ladder, it is hard to look past the Giants with their line-up brimming with talent across all lines.

The Saints have been wasteful with the ball throughout their matches so far and given the Giants excellent intercepting defence, they will need to be much improved to challenge.

Recently the Giants have struggled in Canberra, winning just one of their past 10 matches, but given their current form, back them to win by 1-39 points at $2.00 with bet365.

Averaging 32 disposals per game to start the season, Giants defender Lachie Whitfield has returned to his best. Facing a Saints team that is known for its poor kicking, expect Whitfield to lead the rebounding game for the Giants, while he also takes kick-ins. He collected over 30 disposals in both matches against the Saints last year, so expect him to reach that number again at $1.90 with AFL bookmakers.

A low-key off-season recruit, half-back Riley Bonner has had an impressive start for the Saints since moving across from Port Adelaide. While there have been concerns around his disposal, he has won plenty of footy, averaging a career-high 25.3 disposals through the first four matches. With the ball expected to spend plenty of time in the Saints defence, Bonner is offering nice value to collect 25 or more disposals at $2.15 with online bookmakers.
