GWS v Hawthorn match preview
GWS and Hawthorn will battle it out for potential top-eight positions in what shapes as an AFL round 21 blockbuster on Sunday afternoon.
The Giants have shortened into $1.73 to topple the in-form Hawks ($2.10) in Canberra, after opening as long as $1.90 with online bookmakers. The $1.90 line is set at 4.5 points.
The Giants kept their recent momentum rolling with a hard-fought two-point win over the Demons in round 20. They have now won four straight games to occupy fifth spot on the congested AFL ladder.
GWS have not been playing their best football of late, but winning ugly on occasion is vital to a successful season. Their reliance on uncontested possession proved the difference against the Demons on a tough night for scoring. The Giants have a chance to press for a coveted top-four position here under finals-like pressure.
The Giants have ruled out the return of Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly for this matchup. Changes are unlikely, but if reinforcements are required, young forward Max Gruzewski (five goals) and veteran utility Nick Haynes (28 disposals) impressed in the VFL last week.
The Hawthorn hype train shows no signs of slowing, and they have beaten the Crows, Magpies and Dockers in the past month to climb up the ladder. Hawthorn sit just outside the eight but enter this contest full of confidence.
The Hawks were ruthless in the second half against Adelaide, piling on 10 goals after the main break to post a 66-point win. Hawthorn have trimmed in premiership betting markets and are now listed around the $20 mark after overcoming a dismal start to the season.
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell is also unlikely to change his lineup at this stage. At VFL level, midfielders Harry Morrison and Cam Mackenzie have been posting huge numbers and will be ready to perform if called upon. Defenders Jai Serong and Ethan Phillips are also finding plenty of the ball at the lower level.

GWS v Hawthorn tips & betting strategy
It is impossible to ignore the confidence that is flowing through this Hawthorn side. They play with a cavalier indifference to risk, attacking at every opportunity. This game is likely to be close, so back them to get home by 39 points or less at $2.55 on Unibet.
Mercurial Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan has kicked two goals in each of his three games and shows no signs of slowing down. He produced a best-on-ground effort in round 19 against Collingwood, so back him to kick two or more goals at $2.30 on Neds.
This game will be played with finals-like intensity on a wet ground, so scoring might be low. Possessions should be hotly contested and defensive pressure consistent, so the under 167.5 total points looks to be good value at $1.90 with major online bookies.
