The stuttering Lions will be looking to bank some guaranteed premiership points when they face the Giants at Manuka Oval for round 18.
With no hope of playing finals, the GWS Giants played their worst game of the year in round 17, booting a dismal 3.11 against Port Adelaide. Motivation can be difficult for players when ladder positions become irrelevant, and it will interesting to see if coaching staff can get the boys to play with greater intensity this week.
2022 will be recorded as failed year for GWS, but with coaching changes and some wise recruiting they should be able to find some off-field improvement.
The Brisbane Lions got a dose of the West Coast medicine in round 17 when ‘health protocols’ decimated their line-up and left them exposed to an upset. Losing multiple players simultaneously is always going to present a huge coaching headache, and the Lions just failed to steal the win against an improving Bombers outfit.
With the ladder in a state of flux, and a top four spot still uncertain, Brisbane will be hoping for an easy kill in Canberra. Their ranks will be bolstered, and they are very fortunate to be playing a side not vying for a finals slot. Another loss could see them slip to seventh on the ladder at the end of the round if other outcomes conspire against them, so now would be the perfect time to unleash their A game.
Key matchup: Jesse Hogan v Joe Daniher
Giants key forward Jesse Hogan kicked 2.2 in round 17, not a bad night’s work. Now consider that the rest of his side combined to kick an embarrassing 1.9. Hogan is having a solid season, having played 13 games, averaging 6.6 marks and 1.8 goals at 55% accuracy. The big man will be looking to play his traditional his role this week but would welcome some scoreboard assistance from the wider group.
Brisbane key forward Joe Daniher had a quiet week against the Bombers returning a solitary goal and 10 disposals. Daniher has played 11 games in 2022 and is averaging a commendable 4.2 marks and 2.4 goals at 53% accuracy. Daniher will need to produce these types of numbers at a minimum if the Lions are to have a deep finals run. Now would be an ideal time for Joe to kick a confidence boosting bundle.
GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions betting tips
With far more to play for the Lions are predictably short here. Online bookmakers are expecting them to bounce back hard. The line has been set at a manageable 15.5 points, and cold, cloudy, Canberra weather is predicted. The total points line is 170.5, so plenty of goals are expected. Considering recent form, and with the pressure resting almost solely on the Lions, we are happy to take them at the line. We have a slight sense that an upset might be a possibility, but rational thinking points toward Brisbane to safely cover 15.5 points.
Brisbane Lions -15.5
