GWS Giants smash West Coast by 81 points in AFL Round 4
Greater Western Sydney delivered a devastating 81-point win over West Coast in Round 4, with Jesse Hogan producing a career-best-equalling performance to spearhead the Giants’ 20.12 (132) to 7.9 (51) victory at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday.
Hogan was simply unstoppable, finishing with nine goals from nine kicks in a clinical display of forward craft and pushing GWS to 3-1 for the 2025 AFL season.
He could have had a 10th but opted instead to share one with teammate Aaron Cadman, underlining the Giants’ unselfish forward setup.
His dominance was made possible by GWS’s midfield and rebounding brigade, led by Tom Green (37 disposals, two goals), Darcy Jones (24 disposals, two goals), Lachie Whitfield (35 disposals), and Lachie Ash (31 disposals).
Jones set the tone early with the first goal of the match and tormented the Eagles with his speed and creativity, while captain Toby Greene contributed three goals in another dynamic performance, though he may come under scrutiny for a collision with Matt Owies that resembled tunnelling.
For West Coast, it was another bruising afternoon. With key defenders missing, including Jeremy McGovern, the Eagles struggled to contain the Giants’ forward assault.
Debutant Sandy Brock had a tough initiation, while Harley Reid spent much of the game in defence and only came into it late to finish with 25 disposals.
Jake Stringer showed glimpses of his class in his second game for the Giants, including a deft assist to Jones for the opener, but remains goalless in orange and charcoal.
Meanwhile, Liam Baker (24 disposals) fought hard for the Eagles, and Jamie Cripps booted two goals, but West Coast were overwhelmed in every department.
The Giants’ win marks their largest ever against West Coast and continues their strong start to 2025, while the Eagles are left searching for answers after another heavy loss.
