Graeme Spackman’s colours win at Nowra

Hangover Monday has scored an emotional win at Nowra in the colours of popular Goulburn trainer Graeme Spackman who has died after a short battle with cancer.

Spackman, who died on Tuesday, had his last runners in his own name at Canberra on Melbourne Cup day, November 1, with both his starters placed third.

Most of his horses have been transferred to his former apprentice, Tash Burleigh, who was overcome after Hangover Monday won the second race on Tuesday with all jockeys wearing black armbands.

Winning jockey Adrian Layt was also struggling to speak.

“It is emotional,” Layt told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He was a true gentleman and a great horseman and I’m glad to win in his colours.

Among Spackman’s better horses was Via Facile, the winner of eight races including the 2014 Snake Gully Cup and more than $200,000 prize money.
